Find which shots the revision affected

Keep versions of the voiceover and a simple shot map: which sentence/section a shot supports and where it currently sits on the timeline. After a revision, compare the old and new scripts, mark deleted, moved or added material, then review only the affected sections.

Do not assume a shot still matches its original meaning based only on its timecode; changes to voiceover length or order require a fresh review of picture against narration.

Place B-roll using semantic anchors

For each shot, note the subject, action or example it illustrates. For example, record that a shot illustrates “show the export file size,” not only “00:42.” After a rewrite, find that idea in the new narration and adjust the shot’s in/out points and duration.

If the project is still changing, finishing the main structure/voiceover before placing detailed shots can make revisions easier to manage. If the work must proceed in parallel, keep voiceover versions, section references and the shot map updated together.

Distinguish misplaced B-roll from audio/video sync drift

  • If sound and picture are offset throughout, check track/media alignment and whether a source was moved or cut independently; see the multicamera/multirecorder sync guide.
  • If audio and picture are in sync but a shot no longer illustrates the spoken content, reposition the B-roll affected by the rewrite.
  • If only a few sections are wrong, inspect those timeline ranges; do not assume the whole video needs rebuilding.

Check the editor’s current official help for linking, sync-lock or text-edit behavior.

Make frequent script changes easier to manage

  1. Keep a recognizable version/date for the voiceover or script.
  2. Mark each shot’s intent by sentence, section or chapter, and record its current timeline position.
  3. After a revision, update the affected shot notes and review in/out points in context.
  4. Play a section before and after each shot to confirm it still supports the current narration.
