Subtitles & translation

Subtitle Downloader

Download subtitle files for video you have the right to use, so the text can be corrected, translated or re-timed in your own workflow. Aixcut produces subtitle files in a desktop Chrome or Edge workspace and keeps them with the project.

How to use Aixcut for this task

  1. STEP 01

Add the video you are entitled to work with

Bring in your own upload or material you have permission to use, and check the source captions are present.

  2. STEP 02

    Produce the subtitle file

Export the captions as a file rather than as burned-in text, so the wording stays editable.

  3. STEP 03

    Check and reuse

Open the file, confirm the timings and line breaks, then translate, correct or re-import it as needed.

A subtitle file is more useful than copied text

Copying captions from a player window loses the timings and usually the line breaks. A subtitle file carries the text with its start and end times intact, which is what makes it possible to translate it, correct it, or load it into a different player without rebuilding the sync.

SRT and VTT are the two formats worth knowing

SRT is accepted almost everywhere and is the safe default for hand-off. VTT is the web format and is what browsers expect alongside HTML video. Both are plain text, so either can be opened and corrected in a text editor before delivery.

Respect the rights of the original

Captions on a video you do not own are still someone else's text. Downloading them for personal study is a different matter from republishing them, and the licence and the platform terms decide which is which. Keep the rights question in view before the file leaves your machine.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about this task, its limits and how to judge the result.

How do I download subtitles from a video?

Add the video, export the captions as a subtitle file rather than burned-in text, then check the timings and line breaks.

What format are the subtitles in?

SRT is the widely accepted default; VTT is used for web playback. Both are plain text files you can edit.

Can I edit the subtitle file after downloading it?

Yes. Editing the file is the point, since it keeps the wording and timings separate from the picture.

Can I reuse subtitles from someone else's video?

Only within what the licence and platform terms allow. Subtitles are copyrightable text in their own right.

Is there a free subtitle downloader?

Check the source rights, available file format and current workspace limits. Downloading a subtitle does not grant permission to reuse the video.
