05FAQS

It is not a synonym for “bad quality” — bad quality is overall; an artifact is a specific kind of error. Knowing the type tells you which stage to check.

What is a video artifact?

What people describe as “glitchy,” “soft” or “blocky” may all be artifacts, but they point at completely different causes.

The way to tell: look at the shape.

The four main types

Type What it looks like Main cause
Compression artifacts Blocks, mosaic, edges “smearing” Insufficient bitrate, excessive compression
Banding Stepped rings inside gradients Insufficient bit depth (8-bit) plus compression
Interlace/scaling artifacts Horizontal jaggies, flickering edges Treating interlaced footage as progressive, poor scaling
Chroma artifacts Colour fringing on fine edges, dirty colour Chroma subsampling (4:2:0) limits on detail

Compression artifacts may appear as blocks, while banding appears as visible steps in a gradient. These are clues, not diagnoses; check the source, export settings and playback path before testing a correction.

Other examples of digital artifacts

The same class of problem shows up beyond video:

  • JPEG — blocks and “ringing” in images
  • Audio — the “underwater” or metallic sound from compression
  • Scanning/printing — moiré

These symptoms can involve sampling, quantization, encoding or other processing; insufficient tonal levels do not explain all of them.

Conditions where banding may be visible

Banding may be easier to see in shadows, large smooth gradients or flat backgrounds. Visibility also depends on the display, encoding and source.

If banding is noticed after upload, compare the local export with platform playback and check processing, playback quality and display conditions. Timing alone does not establish one cause.

Artifacts in AI-generated content

A common question: generation can introduce the following anomalies, which may coexist with later compression or playback defects:

  • Wrong hand or limb structure
  • Distorted text (models render readable text poorly)
  • Objects flickering or morphing between frames
  • Physically implausible motion

The difference from compression artifacts: compression-related issues may arise during encoding or transfer, while generated content may also contain generation-related anomalies. Appearance can guide troubleshooting but does not prove a cause by itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is a video artifact?

A video artifact is an unwanted visual defect introduced or exposed during capture, processing, generation, compression or playback. Describe the symptom before assigning a cause.

What are some examples of digital artifacts?

Examples include compression blocks, ringing at edges, gradient banding and metallic sound in compressed audio. Different symptoms do not necessarily share one cause.

What are the four types of artifacts?

This guide groups common video symptoms into compression, banding, interlace/scaling and chroma artifacts. It is a troubleshooting grouping, not a universal four-category taxonomy.

What is an AI artifact in a video?

Generation can introduce incorrect anatomy, inconsistent details or implausible motion. AI videos can also contain compression or playback defects; compare the generated original with later exports.

Can banding be removed completely?

Not always. For diagnostic steps and experiments, see the guide to dark-area banding after upload.
