Before you record: check devices and sync references

  • Confirm each device is recording: check its recording indicator so a camera or recorder is not left out.
  • Create a shared reference: clap or slate where every camera can see it and every recorder can hear it. If using timecode, first confirm device/editor support and follow their official setup instructions.
  • Note the media settings: keep each device’s frame rate, audio sample rate and recording mode for checks after import.

Do not change a device setting solely to match a number. Follow current official guidance for the recorder and editor, then check the actual media properties after import.

While recording: preserve sync references

  • If recording stops and starts, create another shared sync reference at the beginning of the new segment.
  • Note when a device stops, restarts or has a recording issue, then check that section after import.

After import: sync and verify in order

  • Import the separate recording and camera files, then use the editor’s current documented automatic or manual sync workflow.
  • Check the start against a shared audio/visual reference and review every camera angle.
  • After syncing, spot-check the beginning, middle and end. If the offset changes over time, record how it behaves and use the editor’s official help to troubleshoot; do not infer one cause from a late offset alone.
  • If the editor offers linked or locked sync tracks, enable the option after verification and according to its official instructions.

If you have one audio track and several cameras

If each camera also recorded the same audible event, its scratch audio may provide a sync reference. Align the picture first, then use the separate recording as the final audio track if the editor supports that workflow.

Different cameras may capture different sounds or time ranges. Confirm that the files share a recognizable reference, then follow the editor’s instructions.
