Services labeled “copyright checker” may check music records or license information. Read their scope; their output is not YouTube’s decision on a specific upload.
What is checkable before upload, and what is not
| Checkable | Not checkable |
|---|---|
| A music library’s licensing and commercial terms | YouTube’s Content ID database |
| Whether footage is public domain | Whether a rights holder will claim you |
| Your own channel’s past claim history | Whether someone else’s upload of the same clip gets matched |
Public lookup results cannot replace YouTube’s matching of an upload or establish what action a rights holder may take.
Checks before uploading
Review these items:
- Check the source and applicable license for music, picture and other assets; keep records.
- Use only the material needed for the intended commentary, teaching or other purpose; duration alone does not decide legality.
- Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and any checks shown in the upload interface, noting their limits.
- Seek qualified legal advice for questions about fair use or other legal exceptions.
Is a clip under 30 seconds automatically safe?
No. YouTube has no rule that a clip under thirty seconds is automatically safe. Do not treat a duration threshold as permission.
Duration is one fact that may matter. Purpose, the nature of the material, the amount used and market effect may also be relevant; seconds alone do not establish a conclusion.
What does the Copyright Match Tool do?
YouTube’s Copyright Match Tool is for eligible creators to find videos that may have reuploaded their content. It does not grant rights to other material or determine whether a planned upload is licensed. Check YouTube’s current help for eligibility and scope.
Catching it quickly after upload
After upload, review the notices and checks available in YouTube Studio:
- Review the copyright checks and restrictions shown in Studio after upload; they do not establish legal permission.
- Read the notice for claimant, affected regions and available actions.
- Keep records of the source and applicable licenses.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if my video is copyrighted before uploading on YouTube?
Review footage and music sources and licenses, keep records, and review any copyright checks offered during upload. Results do not guarantee that future claims will not occur or establish legal permission.
What is the 30 second rule on YouTube?
There is no general rule making clips under 30 seconds automatically safe. Duration, purpose, the nature of the material and market effect must be assessed in context.
How to avoid copyright when posting on YouTube?
Use material you created or have the right to use, and keep permission records. For reaction clips, see the reaction Shorts copyright guide.
Can Copyright Match Tool prove that a clip is cleared before upload?
No. It helps eligible creators find possible reuploads; it does not grant rights to other material.
Does fair use guarantee I will not receive a claim?
No. Fair-use analysis and platform claims are separate issues. See the YouTube fair-use guide.
