04FAQS

Quick answer: Existing captions may be the fastest option, but availability and quality depend on the video. File transcription works from supported audio or video and still needs review. Compare current allowances, export formats, sign-up requirements and privacy/usage terms.

Two different sources for transcript text

Method Where the text comes from Best suited to Check first
View captions/transcript already available on a video The video’s currently available caption track Quickly reading or locating content Whether the option exists, caption language and quality
Transcribe an audio/video file Speech recognition on media submitted to a transcription tool Missing captions, your own media or editable text File support, upload/retention terms, plan and export

Existing captions and a new transcription are not the same source. If names, numbers, quotes or specialist terms matter, check the text against the audio instead of treating any automated result as final.

What to check in a transcription tool

Compare candidates using each vendor’s current feature, free-allowance and export information. Record:

  • Input: YouTube link, file upload, or both;
  • Current free terms: account, allowance, reset cycle, duration and payment requirements;
  • Output: copyable text, TXT, caption files or other formats;
  • Review controls: whether you can edit the transcript and locate timestamps in the media;
  • Privacy and retention: how submitted files and generated text are handled, retained or deleted;
  • Usage rights: permitted use of the video, transcript text and output.

Do not infer unlimited use from “free,” or infer that a transcript generator can recognize speech from a video with no captions.

Review before exporting

  1. Play the media and check names, brands, numbers and specialist terms.
  2. Review punctuation and paragraph breaks; confirm the original context before quoting.
  3. Keep timestamps and check them against the picture when locating edit points.
  4. Choose copy, TXT or a caption format according to the next task.

Aixcut transcribes audio and video into editable text with corresponding video timestamps. You can review it against the picture, correct it, copy it or download TXT. For SRT/VTT, request the format in the chat and use the download link. SRT/VTT links are public cloud links, usually valid for about 72 hours; avoid this export route for sensitive text. Video-upload analysis is billed according to upload duration. To work with a YouTube video, download it yourself first and upload the local file; you must ensure you have the right to use that video.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the transcript of a YouTube video for free?

Sometimes you can view captions or a transcript already provided for a video; check YouTube’s current help and the video’s page for availability. If the captions are unavailable or unsuitable, a file transcription product may offer a free allowance. Check its current sign-up, duration, export and plan conditions on the official site.

Can ChatGPT transcribe YouTube videos?

That depends on the ChatGPT version, account and available tools, including whether they can access the video or audio. Check OpenAI’s current official documentation. You can also transcribe an audio or video file you own or have permission to process, then review the result.

What is the best free app for transcribing video to text?

There is no single best app for every file and use case. Confirm it accepts your input, its free allowance covers the media, the export format works, and its data terms meet your needs. Test a short sample and verify the current plan on the official site.

What is the best YouTube transcript?

If you mean the best transcript result, check whether the text matches the audio, whether timestamps help, and whether names and numbers can be corrected. If you mean a tool, compare inputs and exports against your needs and use each vendor’s latest official information.

Official sources

Capabilities, allowances and plans for the third-party products mentioned in this article follow their official pages. The notes below were checked against those pages in October 2026:

Product (official page) What the official page states
YouTube Help: automatic captions The official help states YouTube can generate captions automatically using speech recognition, and warns that automatic caption quality varies and needs human review and correction
YouTube Help: add subtitles The official help sets out four ways to add subtitles in YouTube Studio: upload a file, automatic sync, manual entry, or auto-translate
ChatGPT The pricing page lists Free at $0/month, Go at $8/month, Plus at $20/month and Pro from $100/month with three usage tiers; it does not list video-transcription capability, so capability and allowances follow OpenAI’s official product pages and help centre

Each line comes from the vendor’s own page, checked in October 2026. Features, allowances and prices change; the vendor’s latest page always governs.
